"Here in the Past may the Present find arms to fight the battle of the Future."
The History Department aims to introduce pupils to as wide a range of historical periods as possible. This involves studying topics across the centuries, from the fall of the Roman Empire through to the fall of the Berlin Wall. A broadly chronological approach is taken, moving from the medieval world in Transitional, through to the modern world with S3-5 classes.
The department also aims to introduce pupils to a wide geographical range of historical topics. We study aspects of World, British and Scottish history.
The department identifies a number of key skills which it wishes to nurture in its pupils. A knowledge and understanding of the past is foremost in these. Pupils will also be encouraged to develop enquiry skills, the ability to examine evidence critically and evaluate it. Finally, the department aims to help pupils develop their communication skills, both written and oral.
The overall aim is therefore to help pupils become informed, critical and articulate about the past which has shaped our world.
