"Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development and this is reflected in the important place that business education assumes in the curriculum."
(Scottish Qualifications Authority)
Our aim is to provide this strand of the curriculum in as exciting a way as possible without losing sight of the fact that examination results matter a great deal.
Courses
Business Management at Intermediate 2 (S3 and S4), Higher (S5 and S6) and Advanced Higher (S6) levels, the emphasis of the first 2 levels being the study of operations, marketing, finance and human resource management and the emphasis of the final level being the study of management theory and businesses in the global context. All 3 levels have a case study element: indeed where Advanced Higher is concerned pupils have to do an extended business report on a real firm, an exercise that is worth a third of their overall grade.
Accounting at Higher (S5 and S6) and Advanced Higher (S6) levels, both levels covering the 2 main strands of this subject, namely Financial Accounting (with its emphasis on reporting) and Management Accounting (with its emphasis on decision making).
The Department also helps run the Young Enterprise Scheme for sixth formers within the school. This scheme helps young people to set up and run a company for a session, with the young achievers being encouraged to enter the Young Enterprise exam set by Strathclyde University's Business School towards the end of their experience.
