Parents
Parents, who are encouraged to have a keen involvement in their children's progress, often comment on the warm, welcoming family atmosphere. Morrison's Academy enjoys a close relationship with parents at all levels of their children's education stretching all the way from nursery to the end of secondary.
We keep parents up-to-date with regular communication. There are also frequent parents' evenings aiming to inform parents of their child's progress so that they feel a valued part of their child's education. Informal notes from teachers help to promote a more personal insight into a child's learning while homework diaries are an easy way for parents to keep in touch with homework. However, the school is always available to answer any questions.
In May 2008, the Senior School Liaison Group held its first meeting. The group was implemented as a vehicle for positive change in the operation of the school, and comprises of representatives from the school's senior management team, the Board of Governors and parents of school children from S1 to S6. The first meeting was explorative, as the concept was new to the school, but it quickly became evident that there was much to discuss.
The aim of the SSLG is to discuss operational matters raised by parents to improve further the school for all pupils.
Items from previous agendas which have promoted lively discussion have included improving the support available to new parents, the allocation of holidays throughout the school year, and health and safety issues regarding the welfare of pupils. The thread running throughout all meetings is how to promote communication more effectively between parents and the school.
May 2009 saw the fourth and last meeting of the School year for the SSLG, and upon reflection by all present it was felt that the discussions had been valuable and productive for both parents and members of the senior management team. New parent members are welcome to join the group next session, and contribute new topics and thoughts for discussion.
For parent representatives who wish to learn more and become involved in the group, previous records of decisions can be viewed on the Morrison's website under the parents' secure area, and any parent who feels that they would like to contribute to the group by attending the termly meeting can approach Mrs Alison Ross at the school.
The school benefits from a very supportive parent base, centred in the MAPA committee which, in addition to fund raising, provides opportunities for parents to become more involved with the school as a whole. We appreciate and value the support of parents whether at Sports Day, the MAPA Christmas Fayre or the many other social events.
The secure area in the Parents' section of the site contains useful information for parents of current pupils. Access to the secure area is gained by using the username and password issued by the school. (Note that for access to the secure area the term 'parent' is taken to mean the legal guardian of a pupil.)
