A day at nursery

Nursery children aged from 3 to 5 years eagerly come running up the path to our Nursery housed in an attractive Victorian building.

Children are warmly/individually welcomed into the nursery by a member of staff allowing an opportunity for parents to communicate with the staff. During the daily Group-time, birthdays and special events are acknowledged and children participate in a short discussion about the current topic.

Children are encouraged to be confident, independent and curious about the world they live in and this is achieved through play with sensitive adult support. The availability of a wide range of art and craft opportunities encourages the imagination and creativity in children. Children may play in the water or the sand and a broad range of toys and equipment are available throughout the nursery to allow children to explore the world around them in a multi sensorial manner. Story tapes, jigsaws, books and computers are also very popular. Children have free access to snack and the nursery follows a healthy eating policy as part of the Health Promoting Schools initiative. The music teacher comes twice a week and we do lots of singing.

Outdoor play is encouraged daily (even in the rain and snow!) and the Nursery benefits from a large private walled garden with excellent resources to encourage outdoor play covering all five areas of the Nursery curriculum. Climbing frames with slides, bikes, scooters and cars encourage gross motor development. The Wendy house with washing line, the ‘tree house' and the dressing up clothes allows role play. Our secret garden, herbs and vegetables are good for learning about digging, planting and growing. Collecting bugs or daisies and having picnics are great fun too. We are working towards our Eco school status.

At the end of the morning children get together to share their news from home before some of the children leave the nursery. Lunch club is always very popular and many children will stay on for the whole afternoon. This is a time for baking, tea parties, playing and learning in a slightly smaller group. At the end of the day a happy but tired little person leaves the nursery looking forward to another action packed and fun filled day tomorrow.
