care & welfare
All staff, teaching and non-teaching are concerned with the care and welfare of the pupils in our school. In the Primary School the role of the class teacher is particularly important in this regard. In the Secondary School pupils will have, whenever possible, the same form teachers from S1 to S6, who see the pupils in their charge every day.
In addition each pupil in Morrison's Academy is guided and supported throughout his or her education and development by a senior member of staff who is a Head of Year. Heads of Year have concern for ‘the whole child' and by support, counselling, encouragement and positive discipline, seek to promote sound values and a sense of worth in every pupil. Pupils have the same Head of Year S1 to S6. This encourages a strong relationship and knowledge of both pupil and teacher to be established.
The pastoral system aims to offer supportive and effective guidance and counselling to pupils when they are required. It aims to produce an atmosphere in which all pupils are confident that they are well known, safe, valued, respected and that there are regular checks and reports on their progress.
Classes and courses in Personal and Social Development are taught and organised by Heads of Year. These enable pupils to build self awareness and self esteem, develop the ability to talk about feelings, to be sensitive to the feelings of others and to foster understanding, concern, and tolerance of others, regardless of race, creed, gender, age, disability and other differences. They encourage in our pupils concern for the social, environmental and international issues of our time.
The school nurse is available throughout the school day and has a pastoral as well as a medical role in the welfare of our pupils.
